DAY AND NIGHT DRAWING DIRECTIONS

  • Draw a picture showing the sun, earth and moon. It would be hard to make this drawing to scale but you should make the sizes of these 3 objects appropriate. Look on page 39 of the green Planetary Science book to get an idea of the size of the moon compared to the Earth. Look at the poster of the Solar System on the back bulletin board to get an idea of the size of the sun compared to the Earth.

  • Make your drawing take up a whole piece of paper.
  • Hold your paper horizontal not vertical
  • Anything bolded and underlined should be written and labeled on your diagram.

Labeling & coloring directions:

1. Sun
* Label Sun and in parentheses write: a star which is a luminous object
creating its own light through fusion. The Sun should be colored.

2. Earth (You may use your globe as a model)

* Draw in the imaginary axis (straw), remember the tilt which is
23.5º (just use your globe as a model to do this approximately)
Tilt the North Pole away from the sun to represent winter.

* Label axis.

* Label Earth, North Pole, South Pole

* Draw and label the equator 0°. (Remember that this will also be tilted, check
out the model)

* Show daytime/nighttime on earth by coloring appropriately.

* Label, draw and color appropriately daytime/nighttime.

* The Earth should be colored correctly.

* Show the direction the Earth rotates by using arrows. Use the information
that you gathered from your Day/Night investigation. Label the arrows:
Direction of earth’s rotation W to E (counterclockwise)

3. Moon

* Draw a moon

* Label moon.

* Wherever you draw your moon, the part that is facing the sun should also be
colored to show daytime. But to make it different from the earth leave or color
it white and make the unlit portion black.
